Type I diabetic patients are insulin dependent. They need periodic injections of insulin to keep their blood glucose at normal levels. The insulin used for administration has to be kept refrigerated until administration so that it does not get denatured. This has been a great problem for people in developing countries where refrigeration is a luxury. Many house holds in developing countries do not have a refrigerator in their kitchen. The recent discovery by a Monash University chemist Bianca van Lierop and her colleagues address this very question. They developed a form of insulin that retains its activity at room temperature. This modified form of insulin was made by altering the chemical structure of insulin making it is possible to keep it at room temperature without losing its activity. They are also developing another form that can be used as a pill.
